Letís get behind our Eisteddfod

South Wales Evening Post, 24 September 2010

I WAS delighted to read the Post story about the Urdd Eisteddfod tour of Swansea schools (Mistar Urdd swans in with pal Cyril, September 18).

It was a timely reminder to all in the city that Felindre will be hosting next summerís Urdd National Eisteddfod.

I know that much toil is going on backstage, and itís important to reiterate that this event will bring great opportunities to Swansea.

Iíve attended many such events and believe the Urdd National Eisteddfod Ė expected to attract more than 160,000 visitors to Felindre from May 30 to June 4, 2011 Ė will help the city significantly in economic and cultural terms.

I first took groups of students to the Eisteddfod as a teacher at Swanseaís Bishop Vaughan RC Comprehensive School from 1989-99.

Since then Iíve since seen students from my own Class Act Theatre School excel there as members of school groups.

Young people benefit greatly from the competition and all-round experience that the Eisteddfod offers. Thousands of young performers take part, with almost 400 competitions open to youngsters from Wales and beyond.

The cultural education is important but so is the social element; thereís a great togetherness on the maes.

I urge Swansea to get fully behind its 2011 Urdd National Eisteddfod. More details at www.urdd.org.
