Young city stars in Christmas TV special

South Wales Evening Post, 18 November 2009

FOUR young actors from a Swansea theatre group are set to evoke the memory of a 1950s Dylan Thomas classic this Christmas alongside Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones.

Matthew Bawden, Ross Dymond, Trystan Rees and Stuart Waters all took part in filming for BBC production A Child’s Christmases In Wales.

The festive TV show is inspired by poet Thomas’s A Child’s Christmas in Wales and also stars Pirates of the Carribbean actor Steve Speirs as well as Welsh TV favourite Jones.

But for Swansea’s Class Act Theatre School (CATS) proprietor Jill Williams, her eyes will be on her four students – Matthew, Ross, Trystan and Stuart.

“Everyone at the theatre school is delighted for the four of them,” she said.

“They did exceptionally well during auditions in Porthcawl and the day’s filming in the Rhondda. They were superb ambassadors for Swansea.”

All four actors said they enjoyed their experience in front of the cameras.

Ross, aged 14, lives in Gendros, Swansea, and attends Bishop Gore school.

He said: “It’s fantastic to be in the same show as stars like Ruth Jones. It was a long day’s filming but great experience.”

Bishopston Comprehensive School pupil Trystan, aged 15, who lives in West Cross, added: “Everything we’re taught at CATS came in really useful during the audition process and the filming.”

But while they wait for the show to be aired, it’s back to treading the boards for three of the rising stars.

Matthew, Ross and Stuart will be appearing in CATS pantomime Cinderella at Pontardawe Arts Centre, which runs from December 14 to 22.

A Child’s Christmases in Wales will be shown on BBC Four at 10pm on Thursday, December 17.
