Class Act living the teen dream in 13

Western Mail, 15 July 2010

CLASS Act Theatre School are continuing their run at Swansea Grand Theatre with performances of the high energy musical 13.

The youth theatre staged Godspell at the venue last weekend and now the young actors are performing the contrasting stage show.

“Our older students have risen wonderfully to the challenge of using Godspell to tell the story of Jesus and his Disciples in a thoroughly modern way,” said school principal Jill Williams.

“With 13, their younger colleagues have created a high energy and high quality show presenting a storyline that will resonate with all who’ve learned so much from their teenage years.

“Both productions are impressive ensemble pieces which allow a great range of skills to be showcased by our students.”

The production of teen musical 13 was originally due to run for just four performances at Swansea Grand Theatre, but when tickets sold out two extra dates were booked.

“We knew 13 would be popular, but were thrilled with the response,” said Ms Williams.

“It’s fantastic that the South Wales public can be so supportive of local young people who give so much energy and talent to their theatre studies.”

The musical was originally performed in 2007 in Los Angeles.

Written by Tony award-winning Jason Robert Brown, it was a smash hit on Broadway and has since found global popularity, especially in the United States of America. It tells the story of young people who face all the highs and lows of becoming a teenager with catchy songs and humorous script.

Godspell, written by Stephen Schwartz, was premiered in 1971 in New York. It tells the story of Jesus and his Disciples.

Key songs in the hit show include Day by Day, Prepare Ye the Way of The Lord and Turn Back Oh Man.

It’s not the first time a local performer has starred as Jesus in a musical.

During the ’90s, Swansea singer Steve Balsamo took the West End lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar.

There will be a performance of 13 at Swansea Grand Theatre tomorrow at 7.30pm and on Saturday at 10.30am, 2.30pm & 7.30pm. For tickets, call the box office on 01792 475715.
